Jim Gavin on Mayo: "We turned up last year at an All-Ireland final and didn't perform"

Dublin manager Jim Gavin praised his squad after they beat Tyrone at Croke Park on Sunday to advance to the All-Ireland final.

The Dubs won by 2-17 to 0-11 and speaking to Off the Ball's Oisin Langan after the match, he said: "It's all about the collective performance and for us, it's trying to maintain a standard throughout the expanse of the game. I think those players who came on contributed to the team performance.

"There's some players there that didn't play who will be disappointed and some players who didn't travel on the team bus will be disappointed.

"But I know we'll turn up in the middle of next week when we meet again and prepare for an All-Ireland final and those players will be very focused and very determined collectively to do their best for Dublin.

Asked whether the early goal altered his side's approach to the game, he said: "It helps, that's for sure. We knew at any stage that Tyrone could counter-attack hard and they've been prolific in the Ulster Championship. They had big scores against Armagh so we knew if we gave them any space they could punish us. You saw there glimpses of it during the game so we had to be very pointed today and I thought the work-rate was excellent from the Dublin players.

"The last couple of seasons we've seen many teams playing 14 behind the ball against us in their own half and it's something that we have to get used to. We've become accustomed to it know and we enjoy the challenge and we have to embrace it. And, if teams want to set up that way - we can't control that. We just have to respond to it and I thought the players responded to it very well today.

"I suppose the biggest strength of this Dublin team is their ability to adapt to various formations that teams will put against them and their ability to respond to those formations.

Looking ahead to the clash with Mayo, he said: "Yeah, All-Ireland finals are always great games. I haven't really seen much of them since we played them in March in the National Football League.

"That's been so many months and both teams have changed dramatically since then. But look, we turned up last year at an All-Ireland final and didn't perform. We were fortunate to come away with the cup in the end so now all the work rests with us for three weeks," he added.
