Jimmy Barry-Murphy steps down as Cork hurling manager

After much speculation in the wake of a defeat to Galway in the All Ireland quarter final, Jimmy Barry-Murphy has made a decision on his future as Cork hurling manager.

In a statement on the official Cork GAA website, he said that after giving it plenty of thought, "I now feel that the time is right for me to step down as manager. I want to sincerely thank the players, selectors, backroom support team and County Board for all their efforts in the last four years".

While he had said that he "can't wait for next year" in the wake of that defeat, it seems that with time and some consideration that Barry-Murphy has come to a different decision and called it a day.

He also thanked the Cork supporters who "always travelled in huge numbers in tough economic times to support us".

Commenting on the news, County Chairman Gerard Lane "As a player, Jimmy's achievements go right back to his first All-Ireland title with the Cork Senior footballers in 1973, and he became one of the greatest dual players to ever grace the game [...]  He is a true legend and an iconic figure in Cork GAA, and we thank him most sincerely for all that he has done for our Association in over 40 years".
