John Kiely on Limerick win: “We’ve had a good start but there’s a long way to go”

Limerick hurling manager John Kiely attempted to play down his side’s impressive showing against Waterford after the Treaty men cruised to victory in the Munster Championship.

The win marked a first championship triumph for Limerick over Waterford since 2007 as they set down a huge statement of intent at the Gaelic Grounds.

But Kiely feels his side need to keep their composure if they are to fulfill the promise from their Munster Championship campaign.

“We’ve had a good start to the championship but there’s a long way to go,” Kiely said.

“We’ll measure ourselves by our performances and the results in competitive games. And that’s going to continue because that’s the bottom line.

“At the moment I’m very happy with the work ethic and the attitude of the players. They’ve applied themselves extremely well and they’re very grounded.

“We just have to keep our heads down and go again next weekend.”

Kiely reflected on his side’s overall performance against Waterford and believes there is still room for improvement despite the margin of their 2-26 to 1-16 victory.

“We work hard. We were very solid in defence and everyone worked extremely hard and did their job,” Kiely added.

“We were very secure at the back apart from the goal that Waterford got. That was the only opportunity where I felt there was a lack of security.

“And most importantly when we had the ball we made very good use of it. And that’s what we expect of the lads to play the ball very quickly and move the ball into good spaces.

“We did that today and we were efficient in the most part. I think we hit a few wides in the second half, so we have to keep an eye on that all the time. We just have to keep working on our shooting. We do a lot of practice anyway, so we just have to keep at that.”
