Kieran Cunningham on Stephen Cluxton: "I don't think anyone's had the same impact on the game as he has"

Stephen Cluxton has been a main-stay of the Dublin team over the last decade - winning four All-Ireland's during the course of his career.

Keiran Cunnignham and Paul Kimmage joined Joe Molloy for the Sunday Paper Review on Off the Ball and the panel discussed the legacy of the Dublin keeper.

Cunningham lauded the Dubliner describing him as "the most influential (GAA player) I would definitely say, I don't think anyone's had the same impact on the game as he has.

"A few weeks ago it was announced that Colm Cooper is writing an autobiography due out in October and of the Kerry team of the noughties, he's the sixth player to have written a book and two of the managers came out with books.

"But if you look at Dublin, the 1995 team that won the All-Ireland, Dessie Farrell and John O'Leary ended up writing books and since then, John Leonard, who was a fringe player - the sub keeper...the only books out of Dublin.

"And if you look at all they've done since then in the last few years, who would you want to write a book? You're looking at two guys: Diarmuid Connolly and Stephen Cluxton.

"Paul (Kimmage) would hate this but if I was Paul's sports editor - first of all we'd end up having a lot of rows - but if we did have a meeting in January I would say: 'Get Stephen Cluxton'. If you wanted a six thousand words interview on somebody we know nothing about, that kicks the winning point in an All-Ireland final and walks down the tunnel without watching the presentation and is handed the match ball and kicks it into the stand: that's the guy you want to read about!"
