Kildare footballers handed boost as Daniel Flynn returns to panel

Kildare's new senior football manager Jack O'Connor has been handed a boost ahead of their 2020 campaign, with Daniel Flynn returning to the squad.

Johnstownbridge forward Flynn rejoins the panel following a stint in the USA, having completed his Master's at Maynooth University.

Niall Kelly has also returned to the Lilywhites' setup after a stint of travelling.

O'Connor told the Leinster Leader that both players were back and part of his plans ahead of the new campaign.

"Daniel Flynn is back as is Niall Kelly.

"Johnny Byrne is back with us. Paul Cribbin is back training, but not making full contact yet as he is still getting over that shoulder injury from this season, but in general, we have the vast majority of the players we want and are interested in."

Flynn's return in particular is a massive boost for Kildare and their supporters - he scored 4-11 and earned an All-Star nomination for his performances during the 2018 championship campaign, which saw the Leinster outfit reach the inaugural Super 8s.

O'Connor's first competitive match at the helm is this Saturday at St Conleth's Park in Newbridge against Longford in the Bórd na Móna O'Byrne Cup.

Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday that former Kildare star Ronan Sweeney is taking over as Moorefield's new manager.

He replaces Ross Glavin, who led the club to two senior football championships and a Leinster Club title.

Sweeney has previously worked under both the Waterford and Sligo senior football management teams, under the stewardship of Niall Carew.

Glavin meanwhile links up Jack O'Connor's Kildare managerial set-up for 2020.

Former Kerry boss O'Connor took over the Kildare reigns from Cian O'Neill in August. O'Neill had been in charge for four seasons with the side.

Kildare open their Allianz Leagues Division Two campaign with Fermanagh the visitors to Newbridge on Sunday, January 26th.

Their Leinster championship will get underway at the quarter-final stage on the weekend of May 23rd/24th, against the winner of the Carlow versus Offaly first-round tie.
