Laois let victory slip away against Galway

A late surge saw Limerick beat Tipperary in the Munster semi-final for the second year running. Semple Stadium saw the Treatymen enjoy a 2-18 to 2-16 win, and Limerick’s first win over Tipp at the venue since 1973.

The win was greeted with a pitch invasion from the Limerick faithful, but this was no classic and was more a scrappy affair for the most part.

Tipperary levelled the game with 2 minutes left, scoring Tipperary’s second goal with a blast from 20 yards out. However, it was Limerick’s day as they cobbled together 1-2 in the game’s dying moments, with Kevin Down’s goal in the 68th minute proving to be crucial.

A major upset was on the cards in O’Moore Park, Potlaoise, as Laois allowed Galway to dodge what seemed like certain defeat.

Laois had the Tribesmen on the ropes and led comfortably for most of the game. Galway only went ahead for the first time with a couple of minutes left and had to survive a stoppage time 21 metre free from Laois goalkeeper Eoin Reilly to win 1-22 to 0-23.

The football action today provided a thriller all of its own, with Fermanagh going behind by 11 points against Antrim at Brewster Park but had the gap narrowed to 2 as they entered stoppage time. Fermanagh had a shot cleared off the line for the final act and Antrim emerged shaken but triumphant.
