LISTEN: Kerry face a 'tough assignment' to avoid relegation

Former Kerry great Darragh Ó Sé admits his county are up against it with their battle to avoid relegation from Allianz National Football Legaue Division 1.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice's side must not lose by any more than a point against Tyrone in Omagh on Sunday if they are to realistically survive the drop from football's top tier.

The Kingdom faced the same scenario a couple of years back in Healy Park and prevailed at Tyrone's expense.

Listen to Darragh and Oisin here:

Kerry are odds-on the repeat the trick this weekend and while Ó Sé knows it will be difficult, he has a sneeking feeling they'll manage it.

"The competition in Division 1 is fierce," he told Newstalk's Oisin Langan at yesterday's International Rules management team announcement.

"They set themselves a very tough assignment to go up to Tyrone to try and get a result up in Tyrone, which hasn't been great for us in the past.

"I was up there two years ago when Kerry scraped out a great result - so I'd be quietly confident Kerry can go up and do a job there."

Division 1 state-of-play:

  +/- Points
Cork 15 10
Monaghan 4 8
Dublin 19 7
Donegal 8 6
Mayo 3 6
Kerry -11 6
Tyrone -14 4
Derry -24 1

Ó Sé, who is part of Joe Kernan's management ticket for the International Rules ticket for the test against Australia on November 21st in Croke Park, says Fitzmaurice has gotten a great return out of the campaign regardless of Sunday's outcome.

"I think he's got younger players - I think Stephen O'Brien has had a super league, Johnny Buckley was outstanding," added the Ventry man, who stepped down from his role as Kerry under-21 manager recently.

"He's got different players coming to the fore and I think he's learned a lot about his panel," Ó Sé continued.

"Pa Kilkenny's had a good, extended run in the league. He's found players. Obviously James O'Donoghue's been out all the league, Colm Cooper's been out all the league as well. He's found different forwards and that's been a huge help."
