Michael Donoghue: When that opportunity presents itself, you want your big players to step up

Galway progressed to the ALL-Ireland final after a pulsating clash against Tipperary at Croke Park on Sunday.

The Tribesmen needed a spectacular last-gasp point from Joe Canning to edge the match 0-22 to 1-18 and will meet the winner of Cork-Waterford in the final.

A crowd of over 68,000 witnessed a classic as the teams were tied on numerous occasions before Canning's moment of class eventually separated the sides.

Speaking to Off the Ball's Dave McIntyre after the match, Galway manager Michael Donoghue said: "I think when the game in the second half was just nip-and-tuck and tit-for-tat the whole time, you know, they get a score, we get a score - I think when you reach the 72nd minute with a minute and a half left - when that opportunity presents itself, you want your big players to hopefully be on the end of it.

"And, once Joe got on the ball, I don't think there was anybody in the stadium that didn't know he had a good chance of getting the score and thankfully he did."

Despite dominating aspects of the match, Galway found themselves a point down at the break but Donoghue wasn't too concerned.

"I think even in the first half I thought we were doing ok," he sadi, adding: "And they got the goal and we went down the field and got a score straight away so it just kept us in it and at half-time...we were disappointed and knew we had to improve in the second half.

"I think the biggest thing with the lads is the trust they have in each other and the trust in the game that we're trying to play and there was just a great platform for them to go out in the second half and win the match."
