Michael Ryan: The prize today was massive: win or season over

Tipperary overcame Munster rivals Clare in a thrilling contest in the newly renovated Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday to progress to the All-Ireland semi-final.

It finished 0-28 to 3-16 as the Premier County overcame a second-half fight back from the Banner to advance.

Tipperary manager Michael Ryan couldn't hide his delight with the result and speaking to Off the Ball's Oisin Langan after the match, he said: "We're delighted. I thought it was a real game - an absolute cracker of a game.

"It ebbed and flowed and we might have looked in reasonably good shape there and Clare came roaring back into the game there with six unanswered points to take that (lead) down to one.

"We had it all to do. If anything, the momentum had actually shifted away from us so we had to wrestle it back or wrestle back some form of equilibrium where we were breaking as much ball or getting on as much ball as we possibly could.

"But, they had dominated for a period, no mistake about it and it really was in the fire so we're just delighted, to be honest with you.

"The prize is massive to go forward in the All-Ireland semi-final or season ending, you know, so it couldn't be further apart to be honest.

Reflecting on Clare's purple patch, he said: "Their half-back line absolutely controlled our restarts, time-and-time again and they really were dominating. And I know that's what half-backs are there to do but they were very effective and they used the ball right through that middle third and they weren't just pucking it just aimlessly in - I thought they were finding their players.

"When they got that six-in-a-row, it was a mixture of frees and points from play but I thought they were very efficient in that period.

"And, we did struggle to get the ball back off them and had it continued for another minute or two, and if they had taken the lead - we could have struggled."
