Mick Foley on Kilkenny in 2008: "They were ruthless"

Mick Foley and Brendan O'Brien joined Nathan Murphy for the Sunday Paper Review on Off the Ball.

Former Kilkenny star Jackie Tyrrell is releasing a new book about his time under Brian Cody and some of its extracts came up for discussion.

Foley began: "the extract talked about John Mullane actually, 'I remember seeing John Mullane up on the podium after the 2002 Munster final. He threw his jersey into the Waterford crowd and when I saw him bare-chested that day, in 2007, he's kind of jumping back-and-forth, this is after Waterford have beaten Kilkenny in the league final and he's bare-chested up on the podium again in '07 - 'I stored that image in my head for another day' says Tyrrell, 'The next time I run into Mullane, he'll have his jersey off, I said to myself, because by the time we're finished with Waterford, Mullane will be too embarrassed to be wearing that jersey'.

"There's another section here: 'We did what we set out to achieve that day - to win and to pyschologically scar in the process. We scored 3-30 that day, the same time the game began was the same time the match finished.

"It's raw and it sounds very rough and it sounds very, very unfair almost on Waterford, said Foley, adding: "Do you know what, that's the theme that ran through that Kilkenny team.

"What I found interesting about the extracts, and these are very abridged extracts I'd say, that what you always sensed was the story with these guys was the story.

"In the sense that they were ruthless. They submerged every aspect of themselves for the greater good - their personalities and even their style of play, what they were willing to do, what they had to do to be part of what Cody was evolving and building."
