Mick O'Dowd: "When you're challenger to the champions you need to be clinical. We weren't"

Meath manager Mick O'Dowd lamented his side's second half performance against Dublin during yesterday's Leinster Championship semi-final defeat.

Dublin ran out 10-point winners and will now face Westmeath in the Leinster final for a second consecutive year.

Speaking to Newstalk Sport's Oisin Langan after the game, O'Dowd pinpointed the issues in the performance.

"We were very disappointed with our second half display," he said, "We were three points down at half-time and really the plan was heading into the last 10 or 12 minutes that the gap would be within reach.

"The opening 15 minutes of the second half, we had the chances but we didn't take them. We needed to take them. Then Dublin came down and took pretty easy scores."

O'Dowd acknowledged that while the deficit was within reach in the first half, playing against a team like Dublin requires the highest level of concentration for the full 70 minutes.

"When you're the challenger to the champions, you have to be really, really clinical and we weren't. We put our hands up, we got a bit of a lesson from them in the second half.

"When we look back on [the second half] we'll be disappointed that we didn't keep chipping away at the scores. Three points is just not good enough."
