Mickey Harte on Tyrone critics: “Maybe look in the mirror and look on the bright side of life”

Tyrone football manager Mickey Harte called for his critics to look on the “bright side of life” after watching his side beat Meath to reach Round 2 of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Former Tyrone captain Sean Cavanagh has criticised the county’s style of play and suggested Harte was holding back the talented youngsters he has at his disposal.

But Harte believes he is getting the best out of the players he has at his disposal in an attempt to keep his side competitive.

“I always say that everyone is entitled to their opinion and if that’s the way people feel then they can share that with whoever they like,” Harte said.

“I’m happy to stand on my own two feet and I’m happy to do the things the way we tried to do them for the betterment of Tyrone football and for the players we have at our disposal.

“And if somebody thinks differently then that’s their prerogative to do so. But I’m very happy with the way we’re putting together our team and how they play football. And I don’t think anybody could complain about the excitement that was out there today.

“Every game is not going to be classic football. And I asked the question too. People talk about defensive football and low scoring games. But would you rather a low scoring game that you don’t know the outcome until the end? Or would you rather have somebody at half time being down by 12 to 20 points? You’ll only sleep in that second half.

“Is that more exciting than a game [that is] defensive but [a] quality defensive [game]? I don’t believe so. Some of the people who are spouting about that just seem to have an agenda that is negative and seem to be sad people who are negative all the time.

“Maybe they should look in the mirror and look on the bright side of life.”
