AUDIO: Offaly need to 'start training properly'

Pat Flanagan admits he has a job of work ahead of him to merely lifting the standards of Offaly's fitness to the required standard.

The former Sligo and Westmeath boss took the reins in the Faithful County last October following Emmet McDonnell’s two-year stint.

Flanagan watched his new charges give Dublin a good game in the O’Byrne Cup last night (eventually losing 0-17 to 0-13  to the Leinster champions) and the Clara native told Newstalk’s Oisin Langan afterwards at Parnell Park that “Dublin showed us the level of fitness they must aspire to”.

Flanagan continued: “I was expecting every player to expand himself as much as he possibly could, and get as much out of it physically so we can get up to the different levels – you know, even start training properly.

“Because I think Offaly have stepped off the mark a little bit. We need to get up to a different standard completely.

“I think we’re getting there slowly but it’s going to take another while.”
