Philip Austin on Armagh: "They were well organised and probably that little bit cynical too"

Armagh overcame Tipperary in a close match at Semple Stadium in Thurles by 1-17 to 1-15 on Saturday.

Tipp had numerous chances at the end to tie or even win the match during a frantic conclusion but were repelled each time a determined Armagh defence.

Speaking afterwards to Off the Ball's Dave McIntyre, Tipp Forward Philip Austin said: "We gave up some soft scores there in the second half and just probably didn't get going. They probably stopped us playing and got men behind the ball.

"They were very hard to break down, they were well organised and probably that little bit cynical too which we probably thought they were going to be.

"To be fair to Armagh they took control there for 15/20 minutes in the second half. They got going and we just didn't have a response to them and we probably lost our way in that second half.

"We tried to go long, it didn't work. We tried to go short, they're a hard team if you go short to break down to get up the pitch because they put in so many tackles and unless you get wide enough - you probably won't get past them.

"Sort of, one mistake led to another and they got on top and got a run on us so that was our main downfall I feel," he added.

A controversial talking point in the match saw Austin called back for a free-in when it appeared an advantage should have been played.

"He (the referee) explained to me afterwards that I wasn't through (on goal) and you can ask the crowd behind me if I was through...he said Alan Campbell was pulled back and that I wasn't through anyway - that was his reason to me."
