Poor playing conditions at Hyde Park force Roscommon to give up home advantage for U21 final

Dr. Hyde Park won't be the venue for the Connacht U21 Football final after the decision was taken to move the showpiece game away from the ground.

The pitch was in poor condition on Sunday as Roscommon hosted Mayo in the Allianz League Division One game, which they lost by a score of 1-11 to 1-07.

The conditions hardly helped either side, and despite the best efforts of the ground staff the decision has been taken to move the Connacht U21 Football final away from Roscommon as a result of the waterlogged conditions.

A statement on Monday from the Roscommon GAA County Board outlined that they "regret any inconvenience caused by the move due to concerns over Hyde Park", and that the game would go ahead on Saturday in Markievicz Park in Sligo.

Chairman Seamus Sweeney said that major works on the pitch in time for the 2017 season were planned to avoid a similar situation occurring again, and that they wanted to play all home games in Hyde Park, but nature was working against them.

"We host the Dubs in Hyde Park on Sunday and that has been marked on the calendar for a long time. We want to host the All-Ireland champions in Hyde Park", said Sweeney. "I’m confident that Peter Murray and his wonderful team will have the pitch playable for Sunday".
