Reports: Bernard Brogan suffers cruciate knee injury

Former footballer of the year Bernard Brogan looks set to miss the rest of the season.

The veteran forward was named to start the win over Donegal in the Allianz League on Saturday.

Paddy Andrews came in as a late replacement for Brogan. The Herald are reporting that the St. Oliver Plunkett Eoghan Ruadh man has torn his cruciate knee ligament.

The full extent of the damage is unclear according to Conor McKeon's exclusive story on Monday's back page.

If surgery is required Brogan may not be ready to play again before the start of the 2019 season.

The serious nature of the knee injury and the long road back to playing could spell the end of Brogan's illustrious career.

He turns 34 later this year, and had indicated in an interview last November that 2018 would be his last year in blue.

"Throughout the summer I wasn't sure what I'd do. I had some good form and bad form and was getting only so much game-time. So I was thinking, 'will I give it another go or is my time gone?' and I was rolling that around in my head.

"I sat down with Jim (Gavin) and said what I felt and where I thought I was at. After I had my say, Jim indicated that he wanted me around and wanted me back and that there was a role for me."

Brogan has won 5 All Ireland SFC titles with Dublin, been on a Leinster championship winning team 12 times, won 4 Allianz League titles and been an All Star on 4 occasions.
