"There are far more positives than there are negatives to it"- Dick Clerkin gives his thoughts on the proposed Championship system

Monaghan's Dick Clerkin and Kerry trainer and selector, Cian O'Neill, joined the lads on Off The Ball this evening to give their thoughts on the proposed championship restructure.

"From looking at it today and this afternoon, it ticks an awful lot of boxes" Clerkin explained.

"People will always go into it with their own slant and they'll try and pick holes in it, but for me there are far more positives than negatives."

The GPA put forward their proposal to the powers that be in the GAA, including pre-determined closed and pre-seasons as well as the league and Provincial Championships directly linked to new All-Ireland Series.

"You could make the argument that there are 17 games going from the start to the final and each on of them are now relevant" he continued.

"What this means now is that panels can't use the early part of the year as recovery. You have to be hitting the ground running much earlier in the year than you would have had to have done previously"

Cian O'Neill who is familiar with the preparation before both league and championship campaigns voiced his concerns over the demands that will be placed on the players over the duration of the proposed new season.

"The recovery side of it would be my one concern" said O'Neill.

"There's definitely three weeks rest being taken out there in the new proposal and I imagine when the proposal is reexamined, teams will be looking to get another two or three weeks break in there between games.

"Having more games is one thing, you having your players healthy, fit and prepared tactically, is just as important."

He added: "Players do complain that there aren't enough enough games and I would agree with that point of view.

"I think some guys prefer games, whether they are tougher or not, they just want to be playing more often. Not necessarily all the time, but more often, certainly."

On the topic of the Provincial championships, Clerkin acknowledged that abolishing them may be met with some resistance from counties.

"For Dublin, for Kerry and for Mayo, at the minute the provincial championships are irrelevant. You can see that in the way they are celebrated.

"But for other counties, provincials will be the dominant competition that they want to try and win. For the vast majority outside the top tier, they are very important.
