Tommy Walsh on Limerick: "They were powerful right from minute one - they were just brilliant all over the field"

Limerick claimed the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling title with a 0-17 to 0-11 win over Kilkenny at Semple Stadium in Thurles on Saturday.

Aaron Gillane top-scored for the Treaty County with seven points while Peter Casey and Ronan Lynch added three points a piece.

Former Kilkenny stalwart Tommy Walsh believes Limerick were worthy winners and speaking to Off the Ball's Oisin Langan after the match, he said: "They were powerful right from minute one. They were just brilliant all over the field. They were like Galway last week. It's even hard to pick out one guy. There was seven, eight, nine, ten guys who had star performances today.

"Listen, they deserve it. They're putting in huge work at underage level. They probably looked at it a few years ago, felt they weren't transitioning on rightly from maybe under-14, under-16, minor on to senior but they definitely are doing it now.

"It wasn't a lucky win today by any means. They were just powerful as they have been all year both physically, and more importantly, skillfully.

"At the back, young Kyle Hayes - he must have caught seven or eight balls at centre-back. They had Robbie Hanley there in midfield who had a powerful second half and up front, young Gillane and Casey got points from play on  a hard day to score in the conditions that are here.

"So Listen, it's a great time for Limerick. They can be very confident going home looking forward to good times ahead because the history of this competition means that you're going to be challenging in Croke Park at senior level in the next few years when you're winning at this level.

"So, if I'm a Limerick man going home today, I'm very happy," he added.
