Tommy Walsh praises the Galway hurlers as they prepare for the 2018 Championship

Tommy Walsh has praised the Galway hurling panel for the way they approach matches after they secured their first All-Ireland title in nearly three decades last year.

The former Kilkenny star joined Friday's Off the Ball and speaking to Ger Gilroy, he said: "History is written by the winners Ger, and how many times have we seen Galway win in the league in years gone by and then failing to go on and win the All-Ireland?

"Next minute the talk around is 'Ah, they peaked for the league and they should have saved themselves for the Championship'.

"I think it's gone so professional now - you just have to try and win every game. There's no one tricking anyone anymore - there's no holding back a few players and then going back training in March - it's all year round now.

"And, I think you just have to go out and win every game because you're going to play so many top teams now that you can't get your players into the mindset of 'we'll turn up this week, we won't turn up next week' - it has to be 'win all the time'.

"And I think that's what (Micheál) Donoghue did there last year with Galway. They went out, and I know Wexford turned them over, but every match they were going out to win it.

"And it wasn't to win the All-Ireland, it wan't to win the Leinster (championship) - it was just to win the next match and I think that was a huge benefit to them because it nearly took pressure off them.

"And, you even hear them since the All-Ireland - they're not talking about doing two-in-a-row - they're not talking about anything like that. They're saying 'we'll take our little break now until Christmas and we'll go back then and concentrate on the next match' and I think that will stand them in good stead."
