'Transition back to football is difficult' | Aishling Sheridan

Cavan footballer Aishling Sheridan joined OTB AM to preview the upcoming Ladies' National Football League season and to discuss readjusting to Gaelic football after playing in Australia.

Sheridan spent the winter months with Collingwood in the AFLW and she has admitted that transitioning back to Gaelic football has been "difficult".

"I’m not going to lie, it is hard to transition back," she said.

"Just getting used to the round ball again, even self-confidence and the whole psychological aspect of it as well.

"My first training back with Cavan, I just wasn’t connecting with the ball because it was my first time kicking the round ball in six or seven months.

"It is quite difficult but I have been up in my local park trying to practice, just getting used to kicking the ball slightly differently again."

The Cavan star explained that she had the opportunity to play a challenge match recently and feels well prepared for the season ahead.

"We had a challenge match just this weekend and it was good to just get into an actual game situation," Sheridan said.

"It’s all well and good being able to play in an in-house game but I find the intensity is always a little bit different when you are playing a different team."

Sheridan was also asked what her and Cavan's expectations are as a new inter-county season begins.

"Last year’s league campaign probably wasn’t our best and I kind of missed that, so I’m just excited to get out and playing in the league again," she said.

"Hopefully we can get a win against Monaghan because we haven’t beaten them in a few years and obviously they are our neighboring county so there is always that bit of rivalry.

"You don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself but ideally you would want to get a win under your belt and come out of that group we are in.

"Taking it to championship, Ulster is always going to be the main goal and then you take it to the All-Ireland series after that."
