"Tyrone were seen as one of the nicer teams from the North"

This Sunday, Kerry and Tyrone will be reacquainted in the All-Ireland football semi-final to reignite a rivalry which peaked during the past 15 years.

Tyrone have had to put up with accusations of cynicism over the past few weeks, especially in the wake of the Tiernan McCann dive incident.

Ex-Tyrone All-Star forward Brian McGuigan and Kerry legend Darragh O'Se joined us on Off The Ball tonight to reflect on the footballing rivalry between the two counties, and the Kerryman made an interesting point about the Tyrone teams of his era.

"Tyrone, at the time would have been seen as one of the nicer teams from the North, insofar as they played open football," he said.

"The one thing about the Tyrone team I played against at that time - and Mickey Harte had them in all his teams - they were all ball players and they were all comfortable on the ball. At the same time, the Tyrone teams I played against weren't very big and as a result we always fancied ourselves to play them, probably with a bit of arrogance to an extent. What I noticed about them is that they hunted in packs."

McGuigan also shared an interesting insight into the longevity of some of that Kerry inside in comparison to his own county.

"I have to look at the Kerry team now. You see Marc O'Se and Aidan O'Mahony still playing at the top of their game and they're all around the same age as me. They're still fit to do it. But if you look at the Tyrone players of that time - the likes of me, Philip Jordan, Owen Mulligan, Stephen O'Neill and them boys - we're all the same age but we're not even playing club football anymore now because those years took too much out of us," he said.
