Frank Lampard is the new Chelsea manager

Chelsea have appointed club legend Frank Lampard as their new manager with the ex-England international signing a three-year contract to take charge of the Blues.

The club's all-time top goalscorer has left Derby County where he spent last season as manager, taking the Rams to the play-off final at the end of his sole season in charge.

Aston Villa came out on top in the decider but Lampard impressed sufficiently in his first job as a senior manager and has now replaced Maurizio Sarri, with the Italian having taken the reigns at Juventus after his one season at Stamford Bridge.

Commenting on his appointment, Lampard said: "I am immensely proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach. Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared, however, my sole focus is on the job in hand and preparing for the season ahead.

I am here to work hard, bring further success to the club and I cannot wait to get started."

The 41-year-old, who will be taking over while the club's two-window transfer ban comes into place, will be assisted in his new role by the former Chelsea midfielder, Jody Morris.

Lampard spent 13 years at Stamford Bridge as a player, making 648 appearances while accumulating 11 major trophies in the process, including the Champions League in 2012 when Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich in the final on the German's home soil.

Lampard becomes the 10th full-time head coach in the Chelsea management merry-go-round during the Roman Abramovich era. Few have taken on the job with more goodwill from the Chelsea fans than Lampard.

Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign on August 11th against Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Lampard's first two pre-season games in charge of Chelsea occurring in Ireland, against Bohemians and St. Patrick's Athletic respectively on July 10th and 13th.
