Swansea manager Garry Monk has been telling us about the secrets to his success

When it comes to the current crop of young Premier League managers, Garry Monk is standing out as one of the most innovative around.

The 36-year-old has been in charge at Swansea City since February 2014, leading them to their best ever finish of 8th last season.

Tonight, he joined us on Off The Ball to give us an insight into his method of management and among the innovations he uses in training is to mic himself up during training sessions.

"In terms of being mic'ed up, it's just to see my delivery and improve myself. What was my tone of voice like? Was I assertive enough? Was I giving the right information at that point to that player?" he told Cian Murtagh.

Monk also discussed the goal-setting which has lifted Swansea into a credible upper mid-table Premier League challenger.

"Just playing at the top level isn't enough. You have to achieve something, you have to want to be remembered. If it's not winning a trophy or winning the league, for a club like Swansea it's making sure that we can beat targets and set realistic targets but challenging ones where we can do better than ever before and we can create history ourselves.

"We did that last season. We beat our best ever points tally. There were numerous records: we had our highest place finish in the Premier League, clean sheets, goals scored, most wins, all of those things are what you're trying to fight for and you set those targets for players to want more rather than settling for average or doing just enough. We want to do more than that and the players bought into that extremely well last year and in the end they were policing themselves and really if anything slightly went off, and that's when I come in and being very clear with the way you want to play as well."

Monk who has been at Swansea, initially as a player, when they were still in the fourth tier of English football and after charting the club's incredible journey to the top, he says that they still have to mind the pennies.

"The business that we've done, we've been very shrewd. For instance, Bafi Gomis and Andre Ayew, who were free agents and we brought in on frees, so we're not spending £14-20M plus. We still can't do that, so we're always looking for value for money."
