Gary Neville on Manchester United | 'They need a better centre-back pairing'

Gary Neville has criticised David De Gea for his performance at a crucial juncture in the match against Everton, which saw United drop two points in the final minute.

Neville believes that the 3-3 draw was one of the best-rounded performances for United so far this season, but felt there was a paradox at play.

"I have watched Manchester United so much here this season, I called them an odd bunch a couple of weeks ago," Neville told Sky Sports.

"Quite often, they can play quite poorly in matches yet in attacking moments they will go and win the game.

"I actually thought they played really well - in fact, I can't think of a better all-round Manchester United performance where they looked balanced with Greenwood on the right and Rashford on the left.

"The two up front, Cavani and Fernandes were brilliant, there was order in midfield. Defensively poor in moments.

"It is almost like the reverse of what is happening for Manchester United; where they've played poorly and won games through attacking moments, tonight they played really well but lost through defensive moments."

Gary Neville on David De Gea

Gary Neville was particularly critical of David De Gea and United's central defenders.

"David De Gea at the end, he doesn't even come out in line with the ball. I think you want your goalkeeper there to come out and eat the striker. You just want your goalkeeper to come out and absolutely take him out.

"Goalkeepers are so quick off their line nowadays. It wasn't a great night for the goalkeeper, it wasn't a great night for the centre-backs either.

"We have known from the start of the season that Manchester United needed a stronger centre-back pairing, that doesn't change. There is no point going on about it.

"In the midst of what was a good performance, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer didn't change the team.

"He didn't change the front six because they were playing so well and were so in control."
