'Crying footballers have become fashionable' - John Giles

Listen to the full interview via the podcast

A few weeks ago, John Giles felt that Manchester City should have considered sacking Manuel Pellegrini over the manager's reaction to the Liverpool defeat.

City are now on the brink of snatching the Premier League title. But while John says some of Pellegrini's decisions have been good, he told us that the Sky Blues also benefited from slip ups around them.

"They've got away with it. A couple of teams have done them favours. Liverpool committed kamikaze the other night and Chelsea drew. I think they've all blown it and City should come out on top now," said the Leeds United and Ireland icon.

John, who recently agreed with Didi Hamann's criticism of Yaya Toure's defensive work, gave his take on the Ivorian's season as well as Edin Dzeko who has scored key goals of late.

City's gain has been Liverpool's pain as the Reds slipped up against Chelsea and Crystal Palace. John believes that manager Brendan Rodgers failed to improve a porous defence which has cost the Anfield side in recent matches, contrasting him with Jose Mourinho.

"I don't think he concentrates on the defence or maybe doesn't have the knowledge to organize the defence in the way that they could be and should be. You listen to his comments after the Chelsea match, when he talked about parking buses, he said more or less that anybody could do that. That's not true. Mourinho does that better than anybody else and I think it showed that [Rodgers] didn't recognize the importance and the art of defending," John said, adding that this had nothing to do with "parking the bus" type tactics.

Signing superior centre-backs will help in that regard according to John who had plenty to say about Luis Suarez' tears on Monday night.

John reckons that some tearful players are "playing to the cameras" and believes "footballers crying has become fashionable".

He also talked about the England World Cup squad and gave his take on whether Ryan Giggs will go down as one of the great players.
