PIC: Giles picks his team to face Poland and feels Keane shouldn't start

John Giles does not think Robbie Keane's talents would be suitable to start the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland on Sunday.

Speaking to Off The Ball, John wants to see a front two of Shane Long and Jon Walters in the crucial match.

"If we were playing Gibraltar again, I'd put Robbie in the team because he's the best finisher that we have when we make chances. But I can't see us in this particular match making any chances," he said.

And he believes that the match has a must-win character.

"On paper, it looks like a match that we must win because Poland have made a very good start. We've lost in Scotland so it looks like a match that we must win," he said.

"If we play as well as we can play, we have a chance of beating them. But definitely, their performances in the group so far have been better than ours."

In terms of selections, he is not favour of putting winger Robbie Brady at left-back in order to have more defensive security and wants to see a defender in that role.

"I definitely wouldn't play Brady at left-back on Sunday," he said, adding that the match against the USA is not enough evidence that the Hull player can thrive in a defensive position.

He also said he would pick David Forde in goal ahead of Shay Given, and explained why he would choose Hull's Stephen Quinn over Glenn Whelan.

But he still feels James McCarthy needs to get on the ball more and wants to see Wes Hoolahan in a roving role in place of either James McClean or Aiden McGeady. He also believes any suggestions that Hoolahan is an "Aviva player" are unfair because the Norwich midfielder has had fewer opportunities to start in away games.

John also reminisced about his first game as Ireland manager in 1973 which also happened to be against Poland, and recalled the hardships of the local people during subsequent and frequent visits there with the team.

He also cast his eye back to the weekend's match between Liverpool and Manchester United and feels the latter were by far the better team.
