A compelling World Series, but is baseball's popularity waning?

Later tonight, we will discover the identity of the 2014 World Series winner as baseball's showpiece goes down to a Game 7 decider between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals.

To preview the match and what victory would really mean for both sides, Off The Ball was joined by David Waldstein of the New York Times.

But there is a sense that it isn't capturing the American public's attention.

"Ratings are not what they once were but a lot of that has to do with the fact that there are so many more channels than there were many years ago," said Waldstein, who also spoke about the ways baseball organisers are trying to enhance the game to make it more attractive to the viewing public.

But Waldstein still sees it as the second sport in the US but envisages a day where the growing popularity of soccer will match baseball's status among Americans.

As for the two teams involved in the World Series, Waldstein said Kansas are "fun to watch" and came into the series as "underdogs", although they beat San Francisco in Game 6.

Waldstein also detailed the Giants' trajectory and why they remain one of the most storied franchises in baseball.
