Butch Harmon: 'McIlroy must be wary of bulking up too much'

Renowned golf instuctor Butch Harmon believes Rory McIlroy must be careful not to overdo his efforts in the gym.

Speaking to Off The Ball, he said he had seen many images of the World No 1 doing various weights in the gym and preached caution.

"The only caution I would give Rory is I see a lot of pictures of him lifting a lot of heavy weights and I think in a way, you can almost hurt yourself in the gym if you get too bulky and so hopefully he will keep his body tone down, more like a Dustin Johnson, who's in absolutely perfect physical shape," he said.

Meanwhile, in two week's time, golf's leading players will vie for the green jacket once again as the first major of the year at the Masters in Augusta.

As Harmon said, the course will not be a surprise which makes it fun, but he is also looking forward to seeing some of his own golfers take to Augusta in impressive form, including Brandt Snedeker, Dustin Johnson and Jimmy Walker as he explained on Off The Ball tonight.

But he also revealed how Walker's wife Erin Stiegemeier played a role in him working with the four-time PGA tour winner, who was tied for eighth at last year's Masters.

Listen to the full interview via the podcast player:

"Jimmy Walker had called me and wanted to see me. I knew of Jimmy Walker but I didn't really know Jimmy Walker. It took me a few weeks of asking around, watching him play in various events to get some idea who Jimmy was and how he played. Erin is a pretty straightforward person and she did pick up the phone and call me and said 'look, if you don't want to work with my husband, please tell us because we need to look for someone else'. And I explained that I was going to work with her husband but that I just needed to feel it out and get in my comfort zone."

That partnership has now been responsible for Walker's rise to a regular tournament winner and Top 10 regular at Majors.

Turning his attention to harnessing the potential of talented golfers, Harmon gave McIlroy as the best example.

"Rory has proved that if you work hard and you're a great player that those wins will come and that's what everyone needs to strive for," he said, going on to analyse the strengths of the Northern Irishman's swing.

"He's far and away the best player in the world. We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg with Rory McIlroy. He can get so much better than he is right now."

Harmon also gave an insight into the swing changes he has made in one of his charges, Rickie Fowler, and also added that the he wished he had coached was Retief Goosen.

But he also suggested that he would be willing to help Tiger Woods, who he coached until 2004, and give the former World No 1 a second opinion.

"I have no desire to be his coach. Personally I don't think he needs a coach. I think he needs to go to the range and hit some shots, go back to playing golf."
