Construction delays are already causing concerns for Rio 2016

With less than 500 days between now and Rio's 2016 opening ceremony, organisers are already running the risk of major building projects not being finished on time. Construction is yet to start on several venues while other major contracts have not been tendered.

At this stage before London 2012 80 percent of construction projects had already been finished - at the moment 10 percent of the building work in Brazil is complete. Some of the projects that have not started do not have set time-frames or even final budgets.

The current cost to the Brazilian economy of hosting the games is estimated to be €12bn.

The run up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil last summer was dogged by concerns regarding the completion of stadium renovations as numerous construction deadlines were missed and costs spiraled as companies scrambled to get projects over the line.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Marcelo Pedroso, acting head of the Public Olympic Authority discussed the progress, "London and Rio are very different. The laws are different, the processes are different. We are a developing country and we have our own characteristics."

He continues, "I'm relaxed about saying that there is no problem with where we are in our preparations."

This process has been complicated by the fact that a corruption scandal at state-run oil company Petrobras has implicated several of the construction firms who are delivering these Olympic projects.

Brazil has a famously uneven economy - over 1 million Brazilians took to the street to protest over public service issues connected to the state's hosting of the 2014 World Cup.

If projects run over budget, the Brazilian government has guaranteed to finance their completion - this is standard practice for countries hosting major international sporting events.
