David Haye fined £25,000 for behaviour before Tony Bellew fight

David Haye has been fined £25,000 for his behaviour ahead of his bout with Tony Bellew in March.

Haye made threatening descriptions of the injuries he wanted to inflict on his opponent, and also made offensive comments towards fans of Bellew.

At a press conference in Bellew's hometown in Liverpool, Haye branded the crowd in attendance as 'retards.' Off The Ball's Kevin Kilbane subsequently condemned the 36-year-old for his reckless remarks.

"These sort of terms are the equivalent of racism and sexism and I don't care what anybody says. It's exactly the same and these sort of terms should be wiped out now. They're totally unacceptable. And for David Haye to use that word, it's outrageous. I was disgusted when I heard it today. Disgusted with him."

Haye admitted that his comments brought the sport of boxing into disrepute when he appeared before the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) at a board meeting on Wednesday.

Haye previously admitted that he expected to be fined, and said some of his comments 'went too far.'

According to the BBBofC website, Haye made a donation to charity before the fight against Bellew, which he lost in an 11th round stoppage.

Haye's coach Shane McGuigan threw in the towel after Haye spent a lot of the fight hobbling on one leg due to an Achilles injury.
