Will deflate-gate controversy impact on Tom Brady's legacy?

If you've seen the word deflate-gate bandied about it's the biggest story in US Sport at present after rearing its head again.

New England Patriots quarter-back Tom Brady has already lodged an appeal against the four-match ban that he has been handed by the NFL after the League delivered a crushing response to the inquiry into the use of under-inflated balls during the Patriots' playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts in January.

The Patriots have been hit with with a $1M fine as well as being forced to forfeit their first-round draft pick in 2016 and a fourth-round pick in 2017.

The punishment is based on a report by attorney Ted Wells, which found that Brady was "generally aware" of the plot and that it was "more probable than not" that the Patriots had deliberately used balls which were below regulation pressure limits.

Tonight on Off The Ball Jane McManus of ESPN joined us and spoke about the potential impact on Brady's legacy.

"It's a little premature to talk about his legacy. If you look last year, he was the MVP of the Super Bowl and the Patriots went on to win it all. I think there are real questions here about competition and a level playing field that can't be dismissed that easily," she said, before touching on the position that the NFL found themselves in.

"If you have a team that has been found - and Wells certainly found this - that Brady more likely than not was aware of what was going on and if you allow that to happen and allow the team to obfuscate when you come and ask them what happened and then they go on to win the Super Bowl, if you don't issue a penalty for that, it makes the league look toothless when it comes to these investigations and penalties. You have to issue something if you are the league to say that you take this seriously."
