Djokovic edges out Federer in epic Wimbledon final

Novak Djokovic has won his second Wimbledon men’s singles title in a thrilling five set epic against Roger Federer.

The Serb emerged from a titanic tussle that saw the game ebb back and forth, with the final score 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4. The match lasted just under 4 hours.

Federer took the first set on a tie-break but Djokovic bounced back to make it 2-1 – the third set also won on a tiebreak. Djokovic looked to have the match sewn up as he served for the championship in the fourth set but Federer broke and fought back to take a dramatic fourth set.

Djokovic eventually found the gap he needed to break away when, in the fifth set, he broke Federer to take the final set 6-4.

“I dedicate it to my future wife and our future baby. I’m going to become a father soon. It’s a great joy in life,” said Djokovic on court after the match.

“It was a great match to be part of,” said Djokovic, as he praised Federer.

“He’s a magnificent champion and great example and great athlete. I respect your career and everything you have done and thank you for letting me win today. After dropping the fourth set I was hard to get the energy up and turn it around. I don’t know how I did it.”
