Giro d'Italia leader Tom Dumoulin requires "natural break" during Stage 16

When nature calls, you answer - regardless of where you are in the world or what situation you find yourself in.

Just ask Tom Dumoulin. The Giro d'Italia leader made an unexpected stop during Stage 16 as he hopped off his bike for a "comfort break".

The rider, who must have been in a lot of discomfort during the stage which saw riders climb the Mortirolo, dismounted his bike at the side of the road and saw home rider Vincenzo Nibali claim the stage.

His lead of more than two and a half minutes was cut to just over 30 seconds, but the Dutch rider was blunt about making the stop when he spoke to Eurosport afterwards.

"I just had some problems and needed a dump, I could not hold it any more," he said. "It was after the first time on Stelvio, I started to feel it in the downhill and I just had to stop, it was not possible to continue any more."

The 222km stage was won by Nibali, who said: "I didn’t think about being the first Italian to win a stage; what counted was having a strong team, making a big effort and staying up there.

"I am closer now but Dumoulin has the advantage of the time trial in Milan."
