Hamburg residents abandon Olympic bid

Residents of the German city of Hamburg have torpedoed plans of hosting the 2024 Olympics.

52% of voters in a crunch referendum - which included the nearby city of Kiel - voted against the proposal, with many concerned about the estimated cost of €11.2bn.

Hamburg was one of the last remaining bids, now leaving only those of Rome, Paris, Budapest and Los Angeles.

Hamburg's mayor Olaf Scholz expressed his disappointment: "That's a decision that we didn't want, but it's clear."

AFP reports it is the second time in two years that the German public has turned down the chance to host an Olympics after residents scuppered Munich's bid to host the 2022 Winter Games in a 2013 referendum.

650,000 votes were cast in the ballot.

The winning city will be selected in September 2017.
