Harrington: 'The only thing on my mind at the moment is The Masters'

Pádraig Harrington admits the "only thing" on his mind now is The Masters and says he has set his sights on playing in both the Olympics and the Ryder Cup next year following his victory in Florida on Monday.

The 43-year-old returned to winning ways in dramatic fashion as he finished the final round by edging a play-off against young American Daniel Berger.

"Hopefully it's a rediscovery of form," Pádraig told Ivan on Newstalk's Breakfast this morning. "It obviously is just one win," he added of his first big US tournament win in seven years.

"A lot more will be told over the next weeks, months to see if I can recreate it [but] it does change things going forward for a while.

"It was particularly nice, the reaction I got here. I was shocked to be honest. I can't believe how many people watched it, were interested, were blown away by it."

Crucially, victory in the Honda Classic qualifies the three-time Major winner for Augusta next month.

"It is a big deal to be back in The Masters," he said. "I sat it out last year and I was devastated ... not to be there. That's the immediate focus. The only thing on my mind at the moment is The Masters.

"The Olympics ... would be a realistic goal at this stage ... and that would be the big motivation, and maybe [the] Ryder Cup in two years' time."

Speaking of the Ryder Cup, what does Pádraig think of Darren Clarke being named captain for next year? "I think Darren is a great choice," he said. "Paul McGinley is a hard act to follow. It will be a difficult job to put his own spin on it. If he tries to reinvent the wheel, well he better win then."

"I would hope that I would be playing. I really do. This [Honda win] gets me into those big events that if I do play well in, I get into the [Ryder Cup] team... because it really difficult to make the team."

Harrington says his return to the winner's enclosure may affect his schedule and European Tour involvement this year, but he insisted: "Clearly, I'd never miss the Irish Open."

He concluded: "The one thing about winning is you don't win as often as you think you will in your whole life. At times when you're young you think, 'ah, winning is only a stepping stone'.

"As you get older, you realise winning is something to be enjoyed in the moment, and not thinking about, 'wow, what does this mean gong forward?'."
