'I wish I'd realised winning a major wasn't as big a step as I thought it would'

The year 2014 was always going to be a defining one for Paul McGinley.

Fortunately, the Dubliner was able to deliver Ryder Cup glory for Europe.

With different challenges to come in future, Off The Ball's Joe Molloy caught up with the golfer to look back at his career and cast an eye towards a bright future.

During the in-depth interview, McGinley charted his progress from his youth to making it as a pro golfer aged 25.

Explaining how winning a major is "not reaching for the stars and is very achievable" for today's generation of players like Shane Lowry, he contrasted that with his own time.

"When I came on tour, it was only the Nick Faldos and Greg Normans of this world that were winning major championships and the step to me was a mammoth step. I knew the step to Ryder Cup and winning tournaments was something I could achieve and I just wish that I'd realised the step to winning a major championship wasn't as big a step as I thought it would," he said, explaining how technology affected things for players who are not bigger hitters.

McGinley also detailed his on-course plans for 2015.

"What I'm going to do this year is only playing the golf courses that really suit me. I'm not one of the bigger hitters and the golf courses that we play nowadays, particularly the modern courses, are a million miles long as far as I'm concerned," said the 48-year-old.
