Coach Kavanagh reveals the real McGregor behind the 'Notorious' image

Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh gave Newstalk listeners an insight into the real ‘Notorious’ on Breakfast this morning.

Kavanagh joined Ivan Yates in studio to discuss everything from the UFC superstar’s stellar career to GAA icon Kieran McGeeney’s interest in MMA.

“[McGregor] never wakes up in the morning – I don’t think I’ve ever seen him before 2 or 3pm,” said Kavanagh.

“He definitely likes his lie-in. But then he’ll be up late. But to be honest ... what you see is what you get.

“He has a girlfriend, I have a fiancé. Sometimes we go out for dinner together. He’ll talk about cauliflower on his plate with a level of intensity that he’s talking about a fight.

“He’s a very passionate individual and whatever he’s doing he likes to do at a very high level. I wouldn’t use ‘chilled out’ to describe Conor, no. He’s an intense individual, highly competitive in anything he’s doing. He’s very driven and very successful.”

“He just seems to have been able to create this hype, momentum,” Kavanagh said when asked what makes McGregor such a magnet for public attention.

“He’s a great talker. He has kind of an unusual look about him – that sounds a bit weird actually, he’s not ugly or anything! He’s great on the mic. I guess he’s a promoter’s dream ...  Not only is a much better interviewee than I am, but he goes out and he does the business in the ring as well.

“Conor has made a lot of very bold predictions, and each and every time he has gone in and walked the walk as well.”

It’s widely assumed that McGregor is based in America but Kavanagh, who runs the Straight Blast Gym in Dublin, explained: “He lives in Dublin, he trains in Dublin, and yet he’s after getting to the top of an international sport.

“He’s 26 now, 27 ... if I was to guess, I’d say Conor will be out of this game in less than ten years a multi-millionaire.”
