Lewis Hamilton crowned F1 World Champion after Abu Dhabi victory

Lewis Hamilton has won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2014 Drivers' Championship, after Nico Rosberg fell out of contention as he failed to recover from a bad start.

With three laps to go, Hamilton was almost a lap clear of his rival and Mercedes teammate Rosberg, who finished in 14th.

"Woooooaaahh world champion, oh my God, can't believe it, thanks everyone," Hamilton shouted, after taking the chequered flag.

Among those watching the race was Prince Harry, who was heard congratulating the driver on team radio: "You are an absolute legend. Well done mate."

Last night, Rosberg had outperformed Hamilton by four tenths of a second on the track at the Yas Marina circuit, to claim his 11th pole of the season.

However, during today's race Rosberg suffered difficulties after an ERS (Energy Recovery Systems) failure, leading to him dropping behind.

Felipe Massa finished in second place, with his Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas in third.

Hamilton is the first Briton to become a two-time F1 Champion since Sir Jackie Stewart in 1971, and the fourth overall.

With a 17-point lead, and despite the controversial spectre of double points, Hamilton only needed to finish in the top two today.

Last night he said, "Me, I just keep to myself and do my talking on the track, and I know from my experiences of the past I'm better prepared than I ever have been."

Off the track, the 29-year-old German Rosberg said the pressure was on Hamilton, adding: "Lewis has everything to lose, I have everything to gain, so, for sure, the pressure is on him."
