LISTEN: Porterfield 'confident' Ireland can take Proteas punishment

Ireland captain William Porterfield admits South Africa are loaded with match-winners, but insists that his side can still go into tomorrow morning's critical Cricket World Cup clash with confidence.

The Proteas battered the West Indies last Saturday in record-breaking style and now Ireland are going into the eye of Canberra storm to boost their chances of progress from in Pool B.

"Obviously they do have a few world-class players throughout their line-up and lads that can win games," said the Donemana man.

"But we've got to worry about what we can do and what we can control. If someone comes out and plays the way they did the other day you've gotta say 'well played', but we're confident with what we have and how we can go about things. All the boys know what they can offer and what they can do."

Adi Birrell gave Porterfield his international debut when the South African was Ireland boss in the noughties, and now he will face up against his former player as the Proteas' assistant coach.

"I've a lot of respect and a lot of time for Adi," said Porterfield. "He was a great coach for Ireland and a great mentor for myself and it'll be great to see him again and catch up."
