Mayweather retains undefeated record in Las Vegas

Floyd Mayweather Jr has won his much-anticipated clash with Manny Pacquiao after 12 rounds in a fight watched by millions around the world.

The American now stands undefeated in 48 matches after beating the Filipino thanks to a unanimous decision by judges.

"I'm a calculated fighter, he is a tough competitor," Mayweather said after the welterweight world title face-off in Las Vegas.
"My dad [trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr] wanted me to do more but Pacquiao is an awkward fighter."

Pacquiao said he thought he had won, saying of his opponent: "He didn't do nothing."

The 36-year-old chased Mayweather, 38, around the ring for much of the fight but struggled to land a sustained volume of punches.

Two ringside judges scored the bout 116-112, while another put it at 118-110. Mayweather landed 148 punches of 435, while Pacquiao landed 81 of 429, according to ringside statistics.

It was billed as the "Fight of the Century", but there were no knockdowns, neither fighter appeared particularly injured at any stage and both fought cautiously.

However, it is the most lucrative confrontation in boxing history.

The rivals - who were in negotiations for the event for five years - are thought to have walked away with a combined prize purse of $300m (£200m), split 60/40 to Mayweather.

Although Pacquiao, 36, will be licking his wounds for some time, the expected loser's take of $120m means he can at least look forward to an even bigger bank balance.

Mayweather, 38, has said he will retire after a bout in September against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

"I'll do that and I will hang it up," he said.

Thousands of people packed into the MGM Grand Arena for the long-awaited clash, rubbing shoulders with stars including Beyonce, Ben Affleck and Justin Bieber.

Fans had been hoping to see the boxers in the ring since Pacquiao established himself as a legitimate welterweight power in 2009 by stopping Miguel Cotto.

On Friday the pair weighed in below the welterweight limit, with Mayweather coming in at 146lbs, one pound more than his rival.

Mayweather went into the fight as odds-on favourite with Sky Bet at 8/15, while odds of a Pacquiao victory were put at 9/4.
