The Olympic Council of Ireland has chosen 14 year old Mona McSharry from Co. Sligo as the Irish flag bearer at the Closing Ceremony in Baku’s National Stadium tomorrow.

Mona, who swims with Ballyshannon Swimming Club in County Donegal, is the youngest member of Team Ireland and will join flag bearers from 50 nations tomorrow night in Azerbaijan.

Mona commented: "I'm very excited and honoured to be the flag bearer". She follows in the footsteps of Katie Taylor who carried the Irish flag at the opening of the European Games.

Pat Hickey, President of the Olympic Council said that Mona was a superb representative of the 14 sports on Team Ireland. “Mona and the entire team have done brilliantly in Baku in the face of severe competition. They were great ambassadors for our country at these inaugural European Games”.

Over 6,000 athletes from all over the continent competed in Baku in the inaugural games.

Ireland have already won a silver medal and three bronze medals at the games with two more medals guaranteed this afternoon as Katie Taylor and Michael O'Reilly both fight in the finals of their weight divisions later this afternoon.
