'Hoylake favours a more mature golfer and not caveman golf'

Heading into this weekend's Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, many of the usual suspects have not had a great year.

Tiger Woods has endured injury problems as he returns to a course where he won in 2006, while defending champion Phil Mickelson has not had a great season so far.

Rory McIlroy has also spoken about inconsistencies affecting his game of late.

That makes this weekend's Major winner harder to predict but to try and get a clearer picture of the course at Hoylake and the likely challengers, we spoke to Alan Shipnuck of Sports Illustrated and Ronan Rafferty.

Rafferty said it will not be like 2006 when it was "fast and running", while "you've got to keep it in play."

"Hoylake is such a unique test in that it asks so many questions. It's a thinkers golf course, it's a tactical golf course. That favours the kind of player who plays links golf and does favour a more mature golfer," said Shipnuck, who added that it won't be "caveman golf" that wins out.

Shipnuck tipped Rickie Fowler and Jason Day  as younger golfers who may be dangerous over the next few days.

Of the more experienced golfers, Rafferty also feels Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker may be well suited to the course.

Rafferty and Shipnuck also ran the rule over Woods and McIlroy, also predicting their winners.
