'It's the most significant fight in boxing since Ali and Frazier'

Boxing fans have been waiting for such a long time for this to happen.

Suddenly on Friday - after plenty of shadow boxing - Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao announced that they would share a boxing ring together.

But why do the fight now after so long?

ESPN boxing writer and commentator Dan Rafael said money was certainly a factor as pay-per-view numbers dropped for the latter, while TV contracts were also an issue to negotiate, when he spoke to Off The Ball tonight.

"Everybody finally realised a couple of things. Both of these fighters are near the end of their careers. There's not a lot of room to manoeuvre around for this fight. Number two, the amount of money that's involved in this fight compared to any other fight they can make is absolutely staggering," said Rafael, who added that public demand had also been satisfied.

Mayweather, who remains the favourite, is 38 today, while Pacquiao is 36. But Rafael is still expecting a good fight even if neither fighter is as quick today.

"I don't think these fighters are as diminished as people think," he said, adding that both boxers "had diminished at the same rate".

Rafael also feels that this is "the most significant fight in boxing since the first fight between Ali and Frazier in 1971".
