The Dubliner managed four birdies across the 18 holes but a triple bogey on the sixth and bogeys on the 10th and 18th held him back.
He will tee off his second round at 11.40am local time.
Leading the way is George Coetzee of South Africa on 7-under after carding a 64.
He holds a one-shot lead over Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark who is on 6-under.
Among the high profiler challengers with the Race to Dubai in mind, England's Danny Willett is on 2-under.
Rory McIlroy had already pulled out of the tournament before it started.
The 28-year-old withdrew from the event due to security concerns.
Sweden's Henrik Stenson is also an absentee having pulled out.
