Can Chicago Cubs end over 100 years of hurt?

As Chicago Cubs' former announcer Jack Brickhouse once said, any team can have a bad century.

That is something the baseball franchise have definitely experienced as they continue to await a first World Series since 1908.

Yes, that's over 100 years without winning baseball's biggest prize.

"But it's the first week of the season and they are in first place," said Chicago Sun Times writer Ron Rappaport on Off The Ball tonight.

"Cubs fans better enjoy that because who knows how long it will last."

That being said, Rappaport spoke of some solid foundations being built.

"This year they've got some really good established players and they're hoping that their rookies have shown signs. They're not just rookies anymore and have some experience under their belts. They're hoping that these younger players will break out and that with the new additions, that this could be their year," he said.

Rappaport also explained that attendances, TV viewership and support levels at Cubs games had been dropping in recent years.
