McIlroy slumps down leaderboard as US Open provides number of casualties

Seven bogeys and a double-bogey saw Rory McIlroy have a day to forget as he shot a 6-over-par round of 76 on day 2 of the US Open.

The four-time Major winner went into the round well in contention and third on the leaderboard after an impressive 3-under-par first round of 67.

There was no repeat of such a performance however and the 31-year-old Northern Irishman suffered a double-bogey and four bogeys in a nightmare run in six holes of his front nine on day two.

That leaves him 22nd on the leaderboard, 3-over-par all round and seven shots off leader Patrick Reed as he must now battle to stay in the mix heading into the weekend.

Conditions at Winged Foot have not been favorable to anyne and a cool northerly wind caused the West Course to throw up a number of casualties including American Collin Morikawa.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth were all from thier best and are heading home early.

ln fact, only six players are under-par preparing for their third round.

Shane Lowry just made the cut on 6-over-par.

The Offaly native looked like he would be having the weekend off as he struggled throughout his second round but then two birdies in his last three holes saved the 2019 Open Champion by the skin of his teeth.

Graeme McDowell didn't make the cut, finising up on 10-over-par.
