Sonia O'Sullivan may be in line to win two World Championship gold medals from 1993

Sonia O'Sullivan is one of Ireland's most successful athletes and she may be about to add to her tally of gold medals from major championships.

Reports in Friday's Irish Times claims that the Cobh runner may be about to win two gold medals from the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart. O'Sullivan won silver in the 1,500 metres and finished fourth in the longer 5,000 metres final. In both races, she was only beaten by Chinese athletes.

Wang Juxia was the gold medallist in the 10,000-metre race and she has reportedly stated that she and her training partners took “large doses of illegal drugs over the years”. If the reports are found to be true, any results and medals earned by those Chinese athletes may be nullified.

The news means that O'Sullivan could theoretically be promoted from a silver to gold in the 1,500 metres and could jump from fourth place to gold in the 5,000 metres. If the 46-year-old is given the two medals, she will become a three-time World Champion. In 1995, O'Sullivan was victorious in the 5,000 metres final in Gothenburg.
