Stephanie Meadow says U.S collegiate golf program has been crucial for her career

Stephanie Meadow says United States collegiate golf system was a crucial learning curve for her career.

The Alabama University graduate says’ the experience she gained playing against top young talent on college circuit was invaluable.

The Northern Irish golfer was accepted to Alabama University on part of the ‘Title XI” scholarship program. ‘Title XI’ was established for collegiate athletes, both male and female, to have equal opportunities.

Meadow joined Nathan Murphy on Thursday’s OTB.

“Title IX is an amazing opportunity for female athletes. It gives us huge chances to make it,’ said Meadow.

The Olympian believes NCAA established a golf tour that gives young players time to improve and progress on a highly competitive platform. She also pointed out that the tour has given her essential skills on how she conducts herself as a professional golfer.

“There’s so many great schools, and we travel all over the country, and compete against the best.  All you do is learn at that level. It’s very important. You learn how to be an adult, and you learn how you are going to be a pro. Those things are vital; those things are a big part of our professional careers.”

The Symetra Tour player broke numerous Alabama University records during her stay in college. Meadow's point to the tour for helping her game improve. She says most vital part of attending college as a scholarship athlete is the education opportunity on offer, and the back-up plan it creates for players and athletes who don’t make it to the pros.

“It takes a lot of pressure off the golf side of things, you know. I’ve had my injuries, and what happens if that could have been career ending – then what? I just think it’s an all-round great experience for girls and guys to do.”
