USA close in on Europe with morning victory

Europe hold the narrowest of leads after the morning’s fourballs at Gleneagles, with the USA closing the gap and reducing the overnight lead to just one.

When the morning session began the hosts led 5-3, and although Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose were able to deliver another point in the first match of the day, beating Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar 3&2, the visitors were able to make the most of the early exchanges.

Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan were 4&3 winners over Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson, while Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed made similarly short work of their tie – beating Martin Kaymer and Thomas Bjorn 5&3.

The final tie of the morning saw Rory McILroy and Ian Poulter finish all square with Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker. It took a late comeback, and winning the two final holes, from the European duo to rescue the half point and keep Europe ahead.

In the afternoon session Donaldson and Westwood face Zach Johnson and Kuchar in the first match. Through two holes the match is all square.
