'The Yankees are pretty much making clear they don't want A-Rod'

At 39 and having just finished serving the longest ban for taking performance-enhancing drugs in baseball's history, you would think that Alex Rodriguez's career was well and truly over.

The New York Yankees star is ready to return to the sport. But are fans ready to accept the 14-time All Star?

David Waldstein of The New York Times joined Off The Ball on our weekly US Sports slot and he suggested that the Yankees are not exactly keen on maintaining the relationship.

"Now he's back for the first time. He still has three years and $61M left on his contract. The Yankees are pretty much making clear they don't want him. They've hired another third baseman to take his position. They say he's going to have to earn his playing time. But they own the money no matter what and he's trying to say the right things and do the right thing. But they've got a bit of a tense stand-off and he's kind of on his own right now," said Waldstein, who detailed how Yankees fans never took him into their hearts and how powerful he was at his peak.

Waldstein also explained why he thinks that A-Rod has recognised his mistakes, but believes he is "narcissistic".
